Higher Education

The School of Education has a rich tradition of research excellence in the field of higher education. The School is the base for the Higher Education Policy Unit (HEPU) whose associates work in close collaboration with a range of international and UK based colleagues in universities, research organisations, government departments and agencies. Research activity is strongly policy-oriented and seeks to understand developments within wider educational and political contexts. Research conducted by HEPU and colleagues in the School include studies of:

  • Governance and leadership
  • Research policy, funding and management
  • Widening participation
  • Further and higher education partnerships,
  • Higher education and workplace learning
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Employability and career progression
  • Research careers.

Historical studies in higher education complement the strong policy focus in research. Recent and ongoing studies research into the changing work of adult education tutors, the impact of American ideas and practices on the development of British higher education policy, the role of academics in the British Broadcasting Corporation, and a biographical study of the educational life of Lord James of Rusholme.

The School's researchers are consistently successful in attracting external funding to support their work in the field of higher education. Recent projects, many of them large-scale and multi-disciplinary, have been supported by the ESRC, AHRC, HEFCE, British Academy , Spencer Foundation and Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

The collective expertise of members of HEPU, LLI and the School of Education provides a wide range of opportunities for pursuing research in higher education. Research supervision for Masters and Doctoral degrees is available in both full- and part-time study modes. Further details and advice about research supervision is available on the HEPU website and the School of Education research web page.
